The art program "The River Tells Stories" Season 2 – “The Legendary Train Journey” officially opened the 2nd Ho Chi Minh City River Festival 2024 on the evening of May 31st at Saigon Port. The program was directed by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, organized by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism and the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports, and produced by Newday Media., It attracted 10,000 local residents, domestic and international tourists. Attendees were present in person, and millions of viewers watched online across television channels, social media, and other media outlets.

Although Ho Chi Minh City experienced heavy rain for several hours that afternoon, the weather cleared up and the air became cool just before the show started, creating favorable conditions for the program to be a great success.
Following the success of the first season of "The River Tells Stories," season 2, themed "The Legendary Train," is a massive blockbuster musical Directed by General Director Le Hai Yen and a team of leading Vietnamese talents, the show combines singing, dancing, acting, and modern, cutting-edge stage techniques to recreate and honor the glorious history of the Saigon River and our country through the story of the ships. Grand, breathtaking, visually stunning, moving, and brimming with national pride and self-respect – these are the emotions the program delivers to viewers both in person and on television.
Over a period of nearly 90 minutes, "The Legendary Ship" recounted a modern historical story set on the Saigon River through the following chapters: Launching, Arriving, Setting Sail, Rising Waves, and Reaching Far. The program was directed by female director Le Hai Yen.“A storyteller from the heart.”"Writing the script and serving as the General Director, she takes the audience from one surprise to another. Among them are many astonishing and breathtaking performances that audiences have never witnessed before. And true to her nickname, 'The Storyteller with the Heart,' the story that General Director Le Hai Yen wrote in 'The Legendary Train' begins with her passion, love for history, and love for the city in her heart. Therefore, each segment, each story throughout the 90-minute performance touches the hearts of the audience, deeply imprinting in each person the ups and downs, the heroic history, and the legendary milestones of the Saigon River and the nation.".
The story begins with the narration of two characters: the grandfather (played by Meritorious Artist Mạnh Dung, the "old man from Southern Vietnam") and his grandson (played by young Gia Huy), symbolizing the continuity of generations. Under the moonlight, the two stroll across a bridge, gazing at the river. The grandson turns to his grandfather and asks questions about the river and the ships. By answering these questions, the grandfather recounts and guides his grandson, along with the audience, into the stories of the ships that have become part of history and legends of the nation.
Chapter 1 – Launching, recreated the process of building and launching the first boats from the Nguyen Dynasty, marking the beginning of the shipbuilding industry in Vietnam.
Chapter 2 – Landing, describes the 1925 strike of the Ba Son shipyard workers, led by revolutionary Ton Duc Thang, protesting the repair of the French ship Jules Michelet aimed at suppressing the Chinese revolution, reflecting the patriotic spirit and struggle for ideals of Vietnamese workers.
Chapter 3 – Setting Sail is the story of the largest ship, the ship linked to the destiny of the entire Vietnamese nation in the past, which carried the young man Nguyen Tat Thanh on his journey to find a way to save the country.
Chapter 4 – Rising Waves, recreates the river battles fought by special forces soldiers in the Rừng Sác area during the war, showcasing the resilience and resourcefulness of the army and people in the struggle against invasion.
Chapter 5 – Reaching Further: This chapter showcases Vietnam's development in the new era with modern technology in the field of maritime transport, demonstrating the global reach of Vietnamese brands and intelligence.
The entire series is structured as a complete story, like a feature film spanning from the past to the present, about the "legend" of the indomitable and resilient struggle to defend the country, the construction and development of Ho Chi Minh City and the Vietnamese nation, skillfully and subtly told by General Director Le Hai Yen through the narrative of the ships. Through this, viewers not only see Ho Chi Minh City's glorious historical period, when it was on par with the world in building its first ships during the Nguyen Dynasty, but also witness the continuous struggles against foreign oppression on those ships. From this, they see President Ho Chi Minh's great journey to find a way to save the country, and the nation's fierce struggle for peace and independence, with countless sacrifices made. And today, building on the nation's strong will, Ho Chi Minh City in particular, and the country in general, are developing and reaching further with proud economic achievements.
This blockbuster musical combines modern, cutting-edge theatrical elements, offering both high artistic value and a deeper understanding of the history of Ho Chi Minh City and the country in an easily understandable, memorable, and emotionally moving way. Audiences are already familiar with historical stories intertwined with the nation's destiny; however, the way the program recreates these stories through narration, music, dance, and theatrical techniques is incredibly vivid, transporting viewers back to the past and allowing them to witness firsthand the nation's momentous historical events.
Many viewers were overwhelmed with pride and moved to tears. Attending the program, veteran Vo Duy Tan, a former commando in the Sac Forest, shared his thoughts, saying, “The ”Legendary Train“ program is incredibly valuable in reviving the heroic history, and it deeply moved me. The segment ”Rising Waves,“ about the Sac Forest commandos fighting valiantly against the enemy, reminded me of my fallen comrades. The program told a very good, truthful, and moving historical story,” veteran Vo Duy Tan expressed.
General director Le Hai Yen and her talented team, including stage director Pham Hoang Nam, music director Duc Tri, and choreographer Tan Loc, solved the "difficult problem" of bringing musical theater to a large, festival-style setting. The team utilized all theatrical techniques, both conventional and technological, to the fullest extent, allowing the audience to perceive and feel the performance from every angle. The vast stage, spanning thousands of square meters on the harbor, featured constantly moving props—not only large in size, like realistic ships and containers, but also simulating shipbuilding machinery—overwhelming the audience, eliciting continuous applause and surprised exclamations. The entire stage also transported the audience to the set of a historical blockbuster, stimulating all their senses. Moreover, the seamless combination of complex stage settings—sometimes on the harbor, sometimes on the river, sometimes on a ship—continuously creates astonishing surprises for the audience, leaving them constantly expressing their admiration and awe.
