On March 4th, 2023, Newday Media successfully organized the “Kimono – Ao Dai Fashion Show” at the InterContinental Hanoi Westlake Hotel. This event marked the opening of a series of special cultural and artistic exchange events commemorating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan (1973-2023), co-organized by the non-profit organization Be-Japon, the Japanese Embassy in Vietnam, and the BRG Group.
The Kimono – Ao Dai Fashion Show offers the public a rare opportunity to admire stunning collections of traditional and modern kimonos, along with ao dai dresses made from vintage kimono materials by the talented fashion designer Kobayashi Eiko, who is also the founder of the non-profit organization Be – Japon.
The highlight of the program is the performance of the traditional Jūnihitoe ceremonial attire – often seen at events of the aristocracy and the imperial court in the past. Today, the Jūnihitoe has become the attire of the Empress at the Emperor's enthronement ceremony or the wedding ceremony of female members of the imperial family.
The program consists of four performance sections: Light Beyond Time, Blue Connecting the World, Kimono Liberation and Creativity, Tradition Meets Tradition, and The Diversity of Colors.
In the "Light Beyond Time" segment, models showcased Haori jackets crafted from linen fabric over 100 years old. Organdy scarves featuring phoenix motifs symbolized the preservation of historical memories.
The kimono costumes in the scene "Blue Connects the World" were made from fabric over 100 years old and stored in a cupboard left over after the 2011 tsunami in Japan.
The special ao dai (Vietnamese traditional dress) in the Kimono – Aodai Fashion Show were created by Kobayashi Eiko using time-honored Japanese materials such as Meiji and Taisho silk fabrics, or rare Tatero woven fabrics, combined with traditional Vietnamese silk trousers. Some designs were commissioned and hand-painted by veteran Japanese artisans, while others were crafted from fabrics previously used to make kimono furisode or sash belts. Some of the garments were also displayed and explained in detail within the framework of a special fashion exhibition in the lobby of the InterContinental Hanoi Westlake International Hotel.
As someone who personally designs and sews the ao dai (Vietnamese traditional dress), Ms. Kobayashi Eiko deeply feels the similarity between the two garments: both utilize many vertical cuts to accentuate the graceful and elegant beauty of Asian women. Furthermore, both the ao dai and kimono employ hand embroidery techniques to make the garments more refined and luxurious.
